With awesome coastal views out across the North Sea, Craighead golf links is the most recent addition to the Crail Golfing Society, and was designed by the American golf course architect Gil Hanse and opened in 1999.

Craighead is a challenging cliff-top course with a number of unique features including ‘Danes Dyke’, a wall built by the Vikings which dates back to the 7th century, which comes into play on no less than four holes. Although a mere youngster compared to the Balcomie course onsite, Craighead has all the elements of a classic links course; an exposed piece of land battered by coastal winds; little to no protection from trees and other vegetation and tight narrow fairways bridging gorse and heather. However, unlike many of its links course contemporaries, no two consecutive holes face in the same direction, meaning judging the ever changing wind direction is a constant task.

Despite the amount of other top-class golf courses in the county of Fife, the quality on offer at Craighead was instantly recognised by the R&A with the course having already hosted a number of respected golf tournaments including the World Junior Open in 2000.

The clubhouse at Crail Golfing Society is superb and a fabulous place to enjoy a drink post round. The building is perched on a rock with 270 degree views out across the North Sea and down to the Firth of Forth…there are few clubhouses which can match this for a view. There is so much to choose from for a Scotland golf tour but if you’re in St Andrews and you want to escape the town and everything St Andrews, you could do far worse than visit Crail Golfing Society to play either the Craighead or the Balcomie.
