Designed and opened by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 1994, Cabo Real Golf Club was integrated into a 2,800-acre resort and residential development ideally situated on 3.2 miles of beachfront. The vistas, largely of the blissful Sea of Cortez, span for miles and provide stunning backdrops that captivate your attention as much as the links themselves. Aiming to harmonize the course with the surrounding terrain, Jones and his design team artfully contoured the fairways and greens to mimic the varying peaks of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains that magically frame the course.

Playability has long been Cabo Real’s calling card. Known for its “target-golf,” the course does not always demand mammoth carries, booming drives, or long iron approaches into its greens. Instead, Mr. Jones used doglegs, carefully placed bunkers, bouncing fairways, and natural arroyos to challenge his visitors from start to finish. During the slight remodel in 2012, the front and back nines were reversed, which resulted in improved playability, flow, and heightened drama. As such, Cabo Real’s front nine now provides a scenic, gentle test with broad fairways that meander down towards the sea. With holes propped up on seaside bluffs, good shots are rewarded with birdie opportunities and a view of the white sand beaches.

The slightly longer back nine, impressively chiseled into the desert foothills at the base of the mountain’s peaks, utilizes free-form bunkers and small elevated greens to further challenge even the most accomplished of golfers. The fairways are perched atop ridges that climb up the range to the highest point on the course; standing on the 14th green some 500 feet above sea level, the views of the indigenous flora and fauna, jagged topography, and miles of ocean water are worth a moment of silence. Although Cabo Real has hosted two PGA Senior Slam events, the course is equally as friendly to visitors and pros alike. Uphill holes tend to play downwind, while downhill holes typically play into the prevailing onshore breeze, resulting in the proper balance and enjoyment for golfers of all walks and ability.
