West Links, North Berwick Golf Club Review
18 holes, par 71, 6,506 yards. Links.
West Links Course is the original course at North Berwick and has a long history and great traditions. Host course for the Scottish Boys' Championship, it was first established in 1832 and boasts amazing views of the Firth of Forth and the Bass Rock, a world-famous bird sanctuary.
It measures 6,506 yards, is a par 71 and runs alongside the Firth of Forth. On a beautiful, sunny day there is no better place to be. There are old stone walls in the middle of fairways and in front of greens but they somehow seem to just fit.
Typical of the course is the 474-yard third hole, a par four you will not forget. Your drive should be aimed at the gap in the wall you see from the tee, and your second shot played over a wall to a green protected by a deep trap to the right.
And the sixth, at 161 yards, is a great par three with a monstrous bunker protecting the front and four further bunkers surrounding the green.
The 11th, at 546 yards, is an awesome hole. There is thick rough on the left, with the beach and sea a few yards further to the left. Take the safe route to the right of the fairway and you will end up in one of two bunkers. Further traps sit some 50 yards short of the green, as well as a deep trap to the right of the putting surface that also needs to be avoided.
The 18th hole is just 277 yards long and is similar to the 18th at the Old Course at St Andrews. It can be reached with a good drive, setting up a possible eagle or birdie to finish. But whatever else you do, don't slice your drive onto the road that runs alongside the final fairway.
