South West Ireland Regional Overview
A brief insight in the South West of Ireland!
Listen to our very own Sean Fahey (Golf Travel Specialist) talk about his experiences in the region, let his words inspire your next golfing adventure...
I defy you to visit or play golf anywhere in the world and find more beautiful countryside than you will discover in the south of the Republic of Ireland. Mountains, rivers, forests, loughs (lakes) and glens abound will leave you spellbound.
Visit any village and pop into a pub for a quiet drink and you will quickly discover that, in this part of the world, there is no such thing as a “quiet” drink. The pub is the center of village life and you will be welcomed with open arms, treated like an old friend, especially if you have any Irish ancestry. And, let's face it, there is an awful lot of Irish blood coursing through the veins of the American population. Even Barack Obama claims to have long-lost Irish ancestry.
Nothing gets the Irish down. They seem to permanently walk around with a smile on their faces, and they always have a story to share, an anecdote to reveal or a joke to tell. More than anything else, it is what marks out this part of the world from any other.
It is also steeped in history. It became a republic in 1949, and many of the population still regard themselves as British. Rory McIlroy, who was born in Northern Ireland and is entitled to represent Great Britain, has deep feelings for the republic and has announced that he will represent them at the 2016 Olympic Games. While Northern Ireland still uses sterling as its currency, the republic uses the euro. And many goods on the southern side of the border are far cheaper than in Northern Ireland - alcohol, cigarettes, fuel for example.
On this tour, you will play Old Head of Kinsale, Fota Island Deerpark Course, Tralee, Waterville and Ballybunion Old Course, rated by Tom Watson, and many other fine judges, as one of the best in the world.
