Formerly known as the South course, the Smurfit was planned by Arnold Palmer’s chief designer, Harrison Minchew. It was built in 1991 around the already established Palmer course, putting its tree lines and water hazards to good use. Despite being a completely manufactured course, not a single tree was built in addition to the new courses introduction. Over 200 acres of flat farmland was converted into dramatic landscapes with dune type mounding, undulating greens, clever bunker positioning and dangerous water hazards.

Between 1995 and 2007 the Smurfit hosted 13 Smurfit European Opens, a tournament won by the likes of Benhard Langer, Retief Goosen and Colin Montgomerie. Since its birth the course has become a fan favourite and was even considered to be the host course for the 2006 Ryder Cup, although this never actually happened. Despite playing second fiddle to the Palmer for most of its life, this is a true championship golf course and one that matches its predecessor for both length and excitement.
