The golf course at Cruden Bay is a traditional links dating back to the late 19th century, initially modelled by the infamous Tom Morris, with later changes made by Herbert Fowler and Tom Simpson, again, two prominent names in the field of golf course architecture. The club has a fascinating history and is very lucky to still be in existence today, were it not for the benevolence of three local businessmen in the mid-twentieth century. Indeed, even the current clubhouse is the third to be built.

However, back to the course and there are many reasons Cruden Bay is firmly established in the world’s Top 100 golf courses and is without doubt one of Scotland’s finest and most traditional layouts. It is in the design where Cruden Bay really stands out, with many considering the design an absolute masterpiece. Like many of its contemporaries, the layout follows the ancient waves of sand dunes and skirts the weathered coastline on a couple of occasions with stunning panoramic views across the North Sea. For entertainment value, you’ll no doubt enjoy the blind tee shots and driveable par-4s!

When on a golf vacation in Aberdeen and the north-east of Scotland, naturally many discerning golfers will want to tick off the big name golf courses like Trump International Golf Links and Royal Aberdeen. But although not as reputable as its neighbours, Cruden Bay is an absolute must-play for those looking for a classic, traditional links golf course which ticks both the entertainment box as well as being considered one of the world’s Top 100 golf courses.
