The 6th oldest golf course in the world and ranked in Scotland’s Top 10 and the world’s Top 100 golf courses, the Balgownie at Royal Aberdeen is a superb challenge and a must play when on a Scotland golf vacation.

The club is a mere stone’s throw from the centre of Aberdeen and is perched right on the North Sea coastline whilst hugging the River Don estuary. Like many other classic golf courses in Scotland, this is a traditional out and back links, taking you out to the furthest point and back again. The first-nine holes are absolutely magnificent and run alongside the North-Sea, truly nine of the most beautiful holes you could play anywhere.

The back-nine are arguably less glamorous but due to being slightly more elevated, are certainly far more demanding and bear the worst of the elements. The challenging nature of the course is recognised by the fact it regularly hosts major competitions including the Scottish Open and Walker Cup.

The traditional Clubhouse is quite a formal affair and for those looking to gain entry to the more formal dining room, will need to be wearing a tie and jacket. There is a more casual lounge and dining area for those of you looking for a good smooth ale and reminisce.

Golf in Scotland doesn’t get much better and with other great local courses including Trump International Golf Links and Murcar, a golf vacation to Aberdeen in Scotland should be high on your wish list.
